Choosing your ocean poster

Which ocean poster should you choose?

  • Ocean poster or print, Atlantic coast: wild shoreline, deep waves, sea spray and changing sky.
  • Waves and foam: motion frozen in place, close-up, intense blue.
  • Marine wildlife: whale, fish, coral, a briny and mineral register.
  • Frank Ocean poster or print: a stripped-down portrait, a musical world, a nod to the album Blonde.
  • Minimalist ocean: gradient of blue, bare horizon, a settled waterline.
  • Map and ocean currents: cartographic tracing, navy and beige tones.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.

Where should you hang an ocean poster?

  • Living room: a large-format ocean wall poster, alone above the sofa.
  • Bedroom: a deep, calm blue above the bed, never a choppy wave.
  • Bathroom: the room where the subject falls most naturally.
  • Office: a minimalist ocean, understated beside the screen.
  • Entrance: a sea chart, to set the tone from the doorway.

Tip: a navy blue turns grey on a cold wall. Test it on a cream or sand-coloured wall before you settle on your choice.

Ocean poster in colour or in black and white?

  • Colour renders a place's real range of tones: Caribbean turquoise, the Channel's grey, the Atlantic's deep blue.
  • Black and white erases the season and the daylight, so it suits any room and any year.
  • On a wall already busy with colour, black and white calms the whole.
  • On a neutral wall, colour carries more of the escape the subject promises.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on fine art paper, not on canvas or metal.

  • With frame: black, white, oak or walnut, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
