Choosing your music poster

Which music poster should you choose?

Music comes in clearly distinct registers, and each speaks to a precise audience:

  • Jazz poster: brass, smoky clubs, portraits in chiaroscuro.
  • Rock and rock band poster: the stage, guitars, raw energy.
  • Rap poster: strong lettering, marked contrasts, an urban spirit.
  • Vintage music poster: concert advertising, yellowed paper, period lettering.
  • Festival poster: the line-up, saturated colours, a collective spirit.
  • Musical instrument poster: piano, saxophone, guitar, in graphic close-up.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.

Where should you hang a music poster?

  • Living room: a rock concert poster in a large size, near the speaker or the hi-fi unit.
  • Bedroom: a singer's portrait or a vintage jazz poster, in muted tones.
  • Office or home studio: a musical instrument poster, restrained and graphic.
  • Hallway: a series of three festival posters, in the same size.
  • Games room or bar corner: a rap or punk poster, more assertive.

Tip: concert posters with busy graphics call for clear wall around them, with no other frame nearby.

Concert poster or album poster?

  • The concert poster fixes a place, a date, a tour: it has the spirit of the event.
  • The album poster fixes a sleeve, a visual identity, one precise record.
  • For a wall that tells of an artist over time, the album ages better than the date of a concert.
  • The 50x70 suits both; the 30x40 stays the reference for a solo singer's portrait.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, never on canvas. The same image is also available on a metal plate, in several sizes.

  • With frame: black, white or light oak, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
