Choosing your vintage living room poster

Which vintage living room poster should you choose?

Vintage gathers several clearly distinct registers, to be chosen according to the spirit you are after:

  • Old advertising: vanished brands, period lettering, slogans.
  • Retro travel: airlines, trains, destinations, the tourist billboards of yesterday.
  • Pin-up and vintage cinema: stars of another time, film posters, glamorous portraits.
  • Old-school sport: cycling, tennis, boxing, posters of past competitions.
  • Old map and plan: cities, regions, period surveys in patinated tones.
  • Vintage typography and lettering: words, quotations, figures in a dated hand.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.

Where should you hang a vintage living room poster?

  • Above the sofa: a large size, an advertisement or retro travel, as the central piece.
  • On the bookcase wall: an old map or a cinema poster.
  • In the reading corner: a vintage typography, plainer, at eye level.
  • Around the fireplace or the sideboard: a pair of sport or pin-up posters, in symmetry.
  • At the entrance to the living room: a strong piece that announces the tone of the room.

Tip: the patinated tones of vintage go better with a pale or beige wall than with a wall already loaded with colour.

Authentic or reinterpreted vintage poster?

  • The faithful reproduction respects the original composition and colours, yellowed by time.
  • The reinterpreted version keeps the vintage subject but refreshes the shades for a present-day wall.
  • In a living room with old furniture, fidelity to the original reinforces the coherence.
  • In a more contemporary living room, a softened palette avoids an over-marked effect.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, not on canvas or metal.

  • With frame: black, white, oak or walnut, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
