Posters art nouveau

Art nouveau as seen by our artists: plant curves, women in scrolls, 1900 lettering and repeated motifs. Every art nouveau poster is original work, not a scan. Every print is made to order in our Grasse workshop, on 220 gsm satin anti-glare art paper.

Choosing your art nouveau poster

Which art nouveau poster should you choose?

The 1900 style is recognised by its curve, never by a straight line:

  • Poster in the manner of Mucha: a female figure, a halo, drawn lettering.
  • Motif in the manner of William Morris: repeated foliage, wallpaper, symmetry.
  • Scrolls and arabesques: stems, flowers, birds caught in the line.
  • 1900 lettering: hand-drawn titles, thick and thin strokes.
  • Muted colours: ochre, olive green, brick red, gold.
  • Japanese-influenced print: flat colour, black outline, high framing.

The filters on the left narrow by dominant colour, style and mood.

Where to hang an art nouveau poster?

  • Living room: a large Mucha figure, alone on a pale wall.
  • Hallway: two vertical formats, either side of a mirror.
  • Bedroom: a repeated Morris motif, calm and regular.
  • Kitchen: 1900 lettering, an advertisement or a menu.
  • Corridor: three panels, like a series of seasons.

Tip: art nouveau is drawn tall. The vertical format is the original one.

Which frame for art nouveau?

  • Oak or walnut frame: the period pairing, warm and calm.
  • Thin black frame: underlines the outline of the drawing.
  • Wide mount: this is how these posters were presented.
  • Gilt frame: keep it to one piece, or the room tips into pastiche.

Poster, print or wall picture: what is the difference?

Here the three words mean the same thing: an image you hang on the wall. We say print because we print on art paper, not on canvas or metal.

  • Framed: black, white, oak or walnut, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Unframed: the sheet alone, to slide into a frame you already own.
