Choosing your boat poster

Which boat poster should you choose?

The boat comes in several registers, and they do not tell the same thing:

  • Sailing boat and regatta: heeled hulls, filled sails, a rough or flat sea.
  • Vintage boat poster: a shipyard advertisement, a liner, a period line.
  • Black and white sailing poster: a film photograph, strong contrast, a grey sea.
  • Fishing boat and coastal fishing: coloured hulls, harbours, nets.
  • Racing yacht: an Imoca, a carbon hull, offshore racing.
  • Pirate ship and old vessel: complex rigging, a rough sea, a spirit of adventure.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.

Where should you hang a boat poster?

  • Living room: a sailing boat in a large size, alone above the sofa.
  • Office: a black and white regatta, plain beside the screen.
  • Bedroom: an old vessel or a liner, in calm tones.
  • Hallway: a series of three sailing boats by the same photographer.
  • Entrance: a fishing harbour, to set the tone of a house by the water.

Tip: a sailing boat on the open sea needs space around it. Let the wall breathe rather than pushing it against a piece of furniture.

Photograph or drawing of a boat?

  • The photograph of a sailing boat catches an instant: the foam, the heel, the light on the water.
  • The vintage boat poster simplifies the form and plays on flat colour.
  • On a wall that is already busy, the drawing holds better: less detail to read.
  • For a plain living room, black and white remains the safest choice, whatever the decor around it.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, never on canvas. The same image is also available on a metal plate, in several sizes.

  • With frame: black, white or light oak, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
