Choosing your hallway poster

Which hallway poster should you choose?

A hallway poster is thought of as a series rather than a single piece, and several registers lend themselves well to it:

  • Black and white photography: marked contrast, readable even in a line.
  • Line illustration: a simple subject, repeated across several identical sizes.
  • Typography and quotations: a line of text that paces the walk.
  • Maps and plans: cities, countries, constellations, to follow with the eye as you go.
  • Botany and nature: foliage, plant plates, a discreet series.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.

Where should you hang a hallway wall poster?

  • Narrow hallway: small sizes in a line, never a single large size facing you.
  • Wide hallway: two larger posters, spaced out, to breathe.
  • Entrance: the first poster of the series, the one that sets the tone.
  • Staircase: a vertical run that follows the climb of the steps.
  • Landing: a single size, different from the rest of the series, to mark a pause.

Tip: in a hallway the eye moves fast. A series of three or four posters in the same size reads better than an isolated large size.

Which size for a hallway poster?

  • 21x30 or 30x40 for a series aligned at eye level.
  • 50x70 for wide hallways, in two or three spaced pieces.
  • The 100x140 polyptych does not suit a narrow hallway: it needs room to step back.
  • The spacing counts as much as the size: better to tighten the frames than the sizes themselves.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, never on canvas. The same image is also available on a metal plate, in several sizes.

  • With frame: black, white or light oak, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
