Choosing your New York poster

Which New York poster should you choose?

New York comes in several clearly distinct registers, and they do not speak to the same wall:

  • The New Yorker poster: cult covers, a Sempe line or the spirit of the magazine.
  • Black and white New York poster: the skyline, the streets, contrast without colour.
  • Vintage New York poster: old advertising, a faded palette, period lettering.
  • New York worker poster: high-rise construction, girders, archive photographs.
  • Emblematic monuments: the Empire State Building, Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty.
  • Street scenes: Times Square, Central Park, Manhattan seen from the ground or from the sky.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.

Where should you hang a New York poster?

  • Living room: a skyline in a large size, alone above the sofa.
  • Office: a New Yorker cover, restrained beside the screen.
  • Entrance: a black and white street scene, setting the tone from the threshold.
  • Bedroom: a Central Park or a Brooklyn Bridge, calmer than a Times Square.
  • Hallway: a series of three monuments, in the same size.

Tip: black and white agrees with almost every wall, colour asks for a more neutral ground.

Vintage New York poster or contemporary photograph?

  • Vintage tells of a city that has gone: advertising, workers, ocean liners, an America of before.
  • Contemporary photography shows the Manhattan of today, its present verticality and light.
  • In an old or second-hand interior, vintage sits better than too sharp a print.
  • Size: 50x70 for a skyline that needs width, 30x40 for a detail such as a magazine cover, the 100x140 polyptych for a panorama in several panels.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, never on canvas. The same image is also available on a metal plate, in several sizes.

  • With frame: black, white or light oak, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
