Choosing your staircase poster

Which staircase poster should you choose?

The staircase poster covers several distinct registers:

  • Trompe l'oeil staircase poster: a perspective that hollows out the wall, steps that seem to go down or up.
  • Staircase door poster: a vertical format designed to dress a solid door, an immediate sense of depth.
  • Architectural staircase: clean lines, the handrail and structure as the main subject.
  • Urban or monumental staircase: a flight of outdoor steps, a plunging or upward-looking perspective.
  • Spiral staircase: curve and symmetry, a strong graphic result in black and white as in colour.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by size.

Where should you hang a staircase poster?

  • Stairwell: the stairwell poster extends the movement of the steps, in a series across several landings.
  • Hallway: an architectural perspective, to give depth to a narrow passage.
  • Entrance: an urban or monumental staircase, in a large size, right from the threshold.
  • Landing: a vertical format, at eye level between two flights of steps.
  • Office: a spiral staircase in black and white, understated and graphic.

Tip: on a stairwell, line up several identical sizes along the handrail rather than a single large one.

Trompe l'oeil poster or architectural poster?

The trompe l'oeil staircase poster plays with perspective to give the illusion of a passage or a depth that does not exist: it works on a plain wall, with no door or window nearby. The architectural poster documents a real staircase, with its own structure and light: it suits a wall already busy with volume, where the optical illusion would turn confusing. On a bare wall with no relief, the trompe l'oeil has the most effect.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, not on canvas or metal.

  • With frame: black, white, oak or walnut, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
