Choosing your typographic poster

Which typographic poster should you choose?

A typographic poster plays on the word as much as on the form, and there are several ways of doing it:

  • Quotation and lettering: a short sentence, a strong word, staged by the typeface.
  • Designer typographic poster: a controlled composition, a visible grid, an assumed hierarchy between the words.
  • Alphabet and abecedary: the letter alone, for itself, with no text around it.
  • Vintage typography: period characters, advertisements, station or cinema posters.
  • Minimalist: one word, plenty of white, a single colour.
  • Number and symbol: figures, initials, monograms.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.

Where should you hang a typographic design poster?

  • Office: a short quotation, facing the workstation.
  • Entrance: an initial or a word that sets the tone from the door.
  • Kitchen: a simple word, in thick letters, near the table.
  • Living room: a graphic composition in a large size, alone on the wall.
  • Bedroom: a discreet sentence, in a soft colour, above the bed.

Tip: a text reads differently from a distance than a drawing does. Check the size of the letters from the place where you most often stand in the room.

Typographic poster or illustrated poster?

  • Typography rests on words: it carries a precise meaning, an idea, a signature.
  • Illustration rests on an image: it tells without needing to be read.
  • In a room people pass through without stopping, a short word works better than a long sentence.
  • On a wall already loaded with objects, a plain typography, in black and white, stands out without adding visual noise.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, not on canvas or metal.

  • With frame: black, white, oak or walnut, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
