Choosing your desert poster

Which desert poster should you choose?

The desert covers several distinct registers, carried by recognisable places and moods:

  • Sahara desert poster: sand dunes, rippling lines, raking light.
  • American desert poster: cacti, red mesas, an Arizona or Joshua Tree mood.
  • Minimalist desert poster: a clean horizon, a sand-and-beige palette.
  • Desert sunset poster: warm gradient, dune silhouettes backlit.
  • Oasis poster: palm trees and a water point, contrast between green and ochre.
  • Black-and-white desert poster: the relief of the dunes without colour, a more graphic result.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.

Where should you hang a desert poster?

  • Living room: a large format of dunes or a red mesa, alone above the sofa.
  • Bedroom: a minimalist desert in sand tones, soothing above the bed.
  • Office: a graphic American desert, understated beside the screen.
  • Entrance: a desert sunset poster, to set the tone from the threshold.
  • Dining room: an oasis, warmer near the table.

Desert poster in horizontal or vertical format?

The desert lends itself to both readings. Sand dunes and mesa landscapes naturally stretch out in width: a horizontal format captures the emptiness of the horizon. A cactus, a Joshua Tree or an isolated silhouette sit better in a vertical format, closer to portrait. Above a sofa or a low console, horizontal wins out; between two windows or in a narrow hallway, vertical suits better.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, not on canvas or metal.

  • With frame: black, white, oak or walnut, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
