Which Nancy poster should you choose?
Nancy comes in several registers, and they do not tell the same city:
- Place Stanislas poster: the gilded railings, the Héré arch, the eighteenth-century facades.
- Art Nouveau poster: the École de Nancy, plant lines, glasswork, ironwork.
- Nancy map or city plan poster: the old town, the new town, the districts in line.
- Minimalist Nancy poster: the city reduced to a few lines, pale ground, a short palette.
- Porte de la Craffe poster: the medieval towers, grey stone, a frank silhouette.
- Black and white Nancy poster: stone, ironwork, contrasts without colour.
The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.
Where should you hang a Nancy poster?
- Living room: Place Stanislas in a large size, alone above the sofa.
- Office: a minimalist composition, which does not compete with the screen.
- Dining room: an Art Nouveau motif, plant-like and supple, beside the table.
- Entrance: a map of Nancy, to place the city from the door.
- Hallway: a series of three eastern French cities, same size and same frame.
Tip: the gold of the railings only shows on a plain ground. On a yellow or gilded wall it goes out; on a grey, blue or white wall it becomes an accent again.
Nancy poster: classical or Art Nouveau?
- The classical register holds the eighteenth century: symmetry, pale stone, railings, order.
- Art Nouveau holds the curve: stem, flower, glass, a line that never repeats.
- On a wall with mouldings, the classical agrees without effort.
- In a softer room, Art Nouveau brings movement without becoming a literal plant motif.
Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?
All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on fine art paper, not on canvas or metal.
- With frame: black, white, oak or walnut, assembled and ready to hang.
- Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
