Choosing your vintage kitchen poster
Which vintage kitchen poster should you choose?
The vintage kitchen covers several registers, and they do not tell the same story:
- Vintage advertising poster: old advertisements for coffee, biscuits, chocolate, bottles.
- Retro kitchen poster: utensils, copper pans, ranges, period meal scenes.
- Black and white vintage kitchen poster: photographs or engravings without colour, film grain.
- Antique poster: outdated lettering, period frames, yellowed tones.
- Kitchen still life: fruit, vegetables, bread, in a muted palette.
- Vintage kitchen advertising poster: old labels and packaging turned into a poster.
The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.
Where should you hang a vintage kitchen poster?
- Kitchen: above the worktop or the table, an advertisement or a still life.
- Dining room: a series of three retro posters, the same palette.
- Coffee corner or bar: a vintage advertisement for coffee or spirits.
- The hallway to the kitchen: an antique poster in black and white, restrained.
- Utility room or pantry: a vertical size, a motif of utensils or preserves.
Tip: yellowed tones and black and white warm a very white kitchen. On a wall that already carries colour, prefer a muted palette rather than a heavily saturated advertisement.
Which size for a vintage kitchen poster?
- 21x30 or 30x40: the usual size for an advertisement or an old label, legible close up.
- 50x70: above a wide worktop or a dining table.
- Three 21x30 in a row: a series of vintage advertisements on the same wall.
- The 100x140 polyptych: for a large still life in a kitchen open to the living room.
Framed or unframed: a thin black or pale wood frame holds the old character of the subject without weighing it down.
Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?
All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, not on canvas or metal.
- With frame: black, white, oak or walnut, assembled and ready to hang.
- Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
