Choosing your black and white print

Which black and white print to choose?

Without colour, the subject and the contrast carry the image. These are the most asked for families of black and white prints:

  • Black and white photography: landscapes, sea, mountains, architecture.
  • Line drawing: faces, bodies, foliage, a single line.
  • Vintage black and white print: old advertisement, press, typography.
  • Modern black and white wall art: bold shapes, two values, nothing else.
  • Classical nude and statuary: plaster casts, drapery, sculpture.
  • Maps and plans: cities, coastlines, routes.
  • Abstract black and white artwork: contemporary shapes, ink marks, graphic black wall decor.

The filters on the left narrow by dominant colour, style and mood.

Where to hang a black and white poster?

  • Living room: two or three identical formats in a row above the sofa.
  • Bedroom: one calm print above the headboard.
  • Office: a map or a photograph behind the screen.
  • Hallway: a series of four small formats, evenly spaced.
  • Bathroom: a simple line, out of the splash zone.

Tip: in black and white the gap between frames matters more than on a colour image. Keep 5 cm.

Which frame for black and white?

  • Black frame: strengthens the contrast, structures a pale wall.
  • White frame: lightens, disappears on a white wall.
  • Oak or walnut frame: warms a cold image.
  • Unframed: the sheet alone, pinned or clipped, for a studio wall.

Poster, print or wall picture: what is the difference?

Here the three words mean the same thing: an image you hang on the wall. We say print because we print on art paper, not on canvas or metal.

  • Framed: black, white, oak or walnut, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Unframed: the sheet alone, to slide into a frame you already own.
