Choosing your brown poster

Which brown poster should you choose?

Brown covers very different registers, from the earthiest to the warmest:

  • Brown and beige tone-on-tone: sand, clay, linen, a palette that disturbs nothing.
  • Brown and terracotta: brick tones, burnt oranges, warm and assertive.
  • Wood and materials: wood grain, leather, bark, natural veins and textures.
  • Brown botanical: branches, dried leaves, autumn herbaria.
  • Brown abstract: organic shapes, earthy gradations, warm minimalism.
  • Brown and black: dark contrast, a hushed mood, a cocooning effect.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.

Where should you hang a brown poster?

  • Living room: a brown and beige tone-on-tone in a large size, above the sofa.
  • Bedroom: an earthy abstract, soothing, at the head of the bed.
  • Office: a wood or leather texture, plain beside the screen.
  • Entrance: a contrasted brown and black, which structures a dark corridor.
  • Dining room: a brown botanical, echoing a wooden table.

Tip: brown goes with pale walls, which bring out its warmth, and melts into dark walls, for a hushed effect.

Which size for a brown poster?

  • 21x30 and 30x40 for a texture or a botanical detail, at eye level.
  • 50x70 for a centrepiece above a piece of furniture.
  • 70x100 for a living room that needs to anchor the wall.
  • The 100x140 polyptych for a run of browns spread across several panels.

Wood frame or black frame? Wood extends the material of the brown, black brings it out by contrast: the first choice settles, the second asserts.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, never on canvas. The same image is also available on a metal plate, in several sizes.

  • With frame: black, white or light oak, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
