Choosing your Japan poster

Which Japan poster should you choose?

Japan comes in several clearly distinct registers, and they do not tell the same story:

  • Vintage Japan poster: travel advertising, airlines, post-war tourism.
  • Japanese landscape: mountains, rice fields, torii, the light of a season.
  • Map of Japan: the outline of the archipelago, place names, an atlas spirit.
  • Print and wave: reinterpretations of the Japanese motif, flat colour and graphic lines.
  • Urban scene: neon, the streets of Tokyo, contemporary architecture.
  • Cherry blossom: sakura, spring, a pink and pale palette.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.

Where should you hang a Japan poster?

  • Living room: a landscape or a map of Japan in a large size, above the sofa.
  • Office: a vintage travel poster, restrained and graphic.
  • Bedroom: a sakura scene, in soft tones.
  • Hallway: a series of three prints by the same artist.
  • Entrance: an urban poster, setting the tone from the threshold.

Tip: vintage travel posters, with their flat colour, hold as well in a small size as in a large one.

Japan poster or map of Japan?

  • The poster shows a place, a scene or a mood: it tells one moment of the country.
  • The map shows the territory as a whole: it suits anyone who loves travel as a subject, not as an image.
  • A map goes well with other maps, in a series of destinations.
  • A landscape or city poster works alone, as the centrepiece of a wall.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, never on canvas. The same image is also available on a metal plate, in several sizes.

  • With frame: black, white or light oak, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
