Choosing your botanical print

Which botanical poster should you choose?

Botany comes in several registers, inherited from different graphic traditions:

  • Vintage botanical plate: a scientific herbarium, Latin captions, a fine and precise line.
  • Old botanical poster: a nineteenth-century engraving, faded tones, the original frame reconstructed.
  • Watercolour botanical poster: diluted pigments, transparency, outlines that melt away.
  • Black and white botanical poster: engraving or lithograph without colour, everything in the contrast.
  • Botanical flower poster: bouquets, peonies, stems isolated on a pale ground.
  • Decorative botanical plant poster: contemporary foliage, pared-back sizes, a present-day palette.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.

Where should you hang a botanical poster?

  • Living room: an old botanical plate in a large size, above the sofa.
  • Bedroom: a watercolour of flowers, in soft tones that rest the eye.
  • Kitchen: foliage or herbs, in a series of small sizes.
  • Office: a botanical black and white, plain beside the screen.
  • Entrance: a vintage plate, which sets the tone from the doorstep.

Botanical plate or flower poster: which to choose?

  • The botanical plate documents: a caption, a Latin name, herbarium precision.
  • The flower poster composes: a bouquet, a framing, a decorative intention.
  • On a wall already loaded with objects, the botanical plate holds better: its caption anchors the eye.
  • For a series in a line, prefer several 21x30 in the same style rather than a mix of registers.

We print every poster on 270 g photo paper with a semi-matte finish, in the sizes 21x30, 30x40, 50x70, 70x100, and as a 100x140 polyptych for large foliage.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, never on canvas. The same image is also available on a metal plate, in several sizes.

  • With frame: black, white or light oak, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
