Choosing your Brussels poster

Which Brussels poster should you choose?

Brussels comes in several registers, and they do not tell the same city:

  • Brussels map poster: a street plan, the districts, the Grand-Place marked out.
  • Brussels advertising poster: old advertising, brands and signs long gone.
  • Vintage Brussels poster: a sepia or pastel palette, period lettering.
  • Art Nouveau architecture: facades, ironwork, the curves of Brussels houses.
  • Emblematic monuments: the Atomium, the Grand-Place, Manneken-Pis.
  • Street scenes: cafes, markets, silhouettes in the mist.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.

Where should you hang a Brussels poster?

  • Living room: a map or a monument in a large size, alone above the sofa.
  • Office: a vintage advertising poster, echoing a collector's spirit.
  • Entrance: a city plan, to set the tone from the door.
  • Kitchen: a street or market scene, in a medium size.
  • Hallway: a series of three vintage posters, the same tones.

Tip: a map is read close up. Give it a wall you walk along rather than one you look at from a distance.

Map or monument?

  • The map suits anyone who wants to locate a precise district or mark a personal tie with the city.
  • The monument works as an image on its own, recognisable without a caption.
  • At 21x30 the map stays legible; the monument gains presence from 30x40 upwards.
  • For an entrance or an office, the map wins. For a living room, the monument holds the wall better.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, never on canvas. The same image is also available on a metal plate, in several sizes.

  • With frame: black, white or light oak, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
