The stone arches

Arches overlap across the whole height of the frame, some traced in pencil on bare paper, others filled with a flat of gold, terracotta or slate. A fluted column rises on the left, a broken shaft and two ruined cornices cling to the right. At the back, a tiny double arcade opens a passage toward the distance. The paper has yellowed, the edges crumble, and the construction lines stay visible under the colour.
