Choosing your bird poster

Which bird poster should you choose?

  • Garden bird poster: tits, robins, swallows, the ones you recognise at the window.
  • Naturalist plate: several annotated species on one ground, in the spirit of an identification sheet.
  • Vintage bird poster: old engravings, faded tones, Latin captions in the manner of a herbarium.
  • Exotic and tropical birds: parrot, peacock, flamingo, frank colour and a large size.
  • Hitchcock-style bird poster: a cinema reference, black and white, a sky full of silhouettes.
  • Nocturnal birds of prey: owls, a darker atmosphere, clean outlines.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.

Where should you hang a bird poster?

  • Living room: a flamingo or a peacock in a large size, a single piece above the sofa.
  • Bedroom: garden birds, soft tones, never too graphic a motif near the bed.
  • Office: a naturalist plate or a herbarium, a calm, documentary register.
  • Kitchen: swallows or a robin, small size, in the spirit of a country notebook.
  • Hallway: a series of several species in the same size, aligned like a collection.

Tip: vintage posters and naturalist plates keep their legibility even in a small size, unlike very colourful scenes, which need surface.

Bird poster or botanical herbarium?

  • The bird poster stages a living subject, a posture, sometimes a movement.
  • The herbarium stays still: a leaf, a flower, a more graphic and silent rendering.
  • In the same room the two go well together, as long as the paper and the frame stay identical.
  • The 30x40 suits a single species, the 50x70 the plates with several subjects.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, never on canvas. The same image is also available on a metal plate, in several sizes.

  • With frame: black, white or light oak, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
