Choosing your Germany poster

Which Germany poster should you choose?

Germany comes in several clearly distinct registers:

  • Vintage Germany poster: old advertising, gothic lettering, period tourism.
  • Berlin poster: the Brandenburg Gate, the television tower, the eastern and western districts.
  • Munich and Bavaria poster: castles, mountains, traditional architecture.
  • Map of Germany: the outline of the country, the main cities, a minimalist style.
  • Minimalist Germany poster: flat colour, silhouettes of monuments.
  • Germany travel poster: the evocation of a stay, a memory of a road trip or of a longer spell there.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.

Where should you hang a Germany poster?

  • Living room: a view of Berlin or Munich, alone above the sofa.
  • Office: a map of the country, restrained, beside other travel maps.
  • Hallway: several vintage posters in the same size, for a frieze of visited cities.
  • Bedroom: a softer size, far from the vivid colours of advertising posters.

Map or city view?

  • The map tells of the country as a whole: outlines, regions, scale.
  • The city view tells of one precise place: a silhouette, a monument, a street.
  • For a couple who have lived in two different places, two city views are worth more than a single map.
  • For a room you pass through, the map stays more legible at 30x40 than a view full of detail.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, never on canvas. The same image is also available on a metal plate, in several sizes.

  • With frame: black, white or light oak, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
