Choosing your Paris poster

Which Paris poster should you choose?

Paris comes in several registers, and they do not tell the same city:

  • Paris metro poster: line maps, Guimard entrances, station lettering.
  • Vintage and antique Paris posters: period advertising, world fairs, yellowed paper.
  • Black and white Paris poster: film prints, quays, facades, dry contrasts.
  • City of Paris poster: monuments, bridges, zinc roofs, wide views.
  • Notre-Dame poster and Paris Opera poster: single monuments, treated as portrait or engraving.
  • Air France Paris poster: travel advertising, routes to New York or Tokyo, an art deco spirit.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.

Where should you hang a Paris poster?

  • Living room: a city view in a large size, above the sofa.
  • Entrance: a vintage Paris poster, to set the tone from the door.
  • Bedroom: a calm black and white, never advertising that is too busy.
  • Office: a metro poster or an Air France poster, restrained and graphic.
  • Hallway: a series of three monuments, in the same size.

Tip: vintage posters on a cream ground come out better on a pale wall, where the yellowing of the paper stays legible.

An antique Paris poster or a present-day print?

  • The reproduction of an antique poster keeps the original drawing and lettering, printed anew.
  • The contemporary Paris print reinterprets the same monuments with a present-day line or palette.
  • On a classical wall the first sits better; on a pared-back wall the second holds on its own.
  • Both are printed on 270 g photo paper with a semi-matte finish, in 21x30, 30x40, 50x70, 70x100, and as a 100x140 polyptych for a Parisian panorama in several panels.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, never on canvas. The same image is also available on a metal plate, in several sizes.

  • With frame: black, white or light oak, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
