Choosing your surf poster

Which surf poster should you choose?

Surfing comes in several clearly distinct registers, and they do not tell the same story:

  • Vintage surf poster: seaside advertising, old lettering, a washed-out palette.
  • Black and white: board, wave or silhouette, no colour and all the texture.
  • Surf competition poster: championships, riders in action, period sports billing.
  • Chanel surf poster: a fashion and beach icon, the couture spirit of the roaring twenties.
  • Surfboard: the board alone, laid down or in close-up, like a collector's object.
  • Van and seaside scene: a camper parked facing the ocean, a Californian road-trip mood.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.

Where should you hang a surf poster?

  • Living room: a wave in a large size, alone above the sofa.
  • Bedroom: black and white, calmer than a competition scene.
  • Bathroom: the subject that naturally finds its place there.
  • Office: a vintage surf poster, for a corner of wall that breathes holidays.
  • Entrance or hallway: a series of surfboards, identical size, aligned.

Tip: the deep blues of waves turn dark under yellow artificial light. Prefer neutral lighting to keep the freshness of the subject.

Vintage or competition?

  • Vintage bets on nostalgia: lettering, faded colours, the spirit of period advertising.
  • Competition captures movement: a rider, a wave, an instant held still.
  • On a living-room wall seeking calm, vintage holds better than pure action.
  • The size counts as much as the subject: 50x70 for a wave that needs space, 21x30 for a detail of a board.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, never on canvas. The same image is also available on a metal plate, in several sizes.

  • With frame: black, white or light oak, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
