Posters england
England seen by our artists: Big Ben above the Thames, top hats and music-hall silhouettes. Each poster is a personal reading of England, hand-printed on 270 g photo paper with a semi-matte finish in our studio in Fayence.
Choosing your England poster
Which England poster should you choose?
England comes in several clearly distinct registers, from the strict side to the irreverent:
- Vintage England poster: tourist advertising, postcards, an old British style.
- Portrait of the Queen of England: a royal icon, the mounted guard, symbols of the crown.
- Punk Queen of England poster: a pop art twist, saturated colours, a rock and rebel nod.
- Monuments and streets of London: Big Ben, telephone boxes, Georgian facades.
- Flag and Union Jack: graphic motifs, flat red, white and blue.
- English countryside: cottages, hedges, a low sky and deep green.
The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.
Where should you hang an England poster?
- Living room: a royal portrait or a view of London, in a large and clearly visible size.
- Office: a vintage England poster, restrained and placed beside the screen.
- Teenager's room: the punk Queen of England, for a more offbeat tone.
- Hallway: a series of London monuments, in the same size.
- Kitchen or dining room: a graphic Union Jack, as a small touch.
Tip: royal portraits and urban scenes take black and white well, while the English countryside needs colour to keep its depth.
Royal portrait or urban scene?
- The portrait fixes a figure and a symbol: it draws the eye first and sets the tone of a room.
- The urban scene tells of a place: it is looked at longer and pairs better with other posters around it.
- On a lone wall, the portrait works solo, with no need for company.
- For a series or a gallery wall, urban scenes and monuments repeat more naturally from one poster to the next.
Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?
All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, never on canvas. The same image is also available on a metal plate, in several sizes.
- With frame: black, white or light oak, assembled and ready to hang.
- Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
