Choosing your wall decor
Which wall decor should you choose?
The word changes, the object stays the same: a printed image you hang up. Five ways in, from the quickest to the most precise:
- By room: living room, bedroom, kitchen, office, hallway.
- By dominant colour: the sofa, the rug or the wall opposite.
- By style: photography, illustration, painting, minimalism, art deco.
- By subject: sea, mountain, city, botanical, animals, sport.
- By format: one large wall picture on its own, or several small posters in a line.
The filters on the left narrow by dominant colour, room and style, which beats scrolling.
Which format for a wall picture?
- 21x30: the small poster, in a series of three or four.
- 30x40: the format that fits anywhere, alone above a low unit.
- 50x70: the most asked for, readable from across a room.
- 70x100: the large wall poster, alone on one stretch of wall.
- 101x141 in four panels: XXL wall decor, for a wide wall.
Tip: the centre of the image sits 145 cm from the floor, the eye level of a standing adult. Above a piece of furniture you go lower, leaving 20 to 25 cm between the top of the unit and the bottom of the frame.
A gallery wall, or one large image?
- One strong piece: a large decorative frame above the sofa, nothing around it.
- Two identical formats: the safest pairing, 5 cm between the frames.
- Three small decorative pictures in a line: they fill the width of a unit.
- A gallery wall: same frames, same gap, mixed formats.
- Unframed wall posters: clipped or pinned, a workshop feel.
- No stretched canvases: our wall pictures are wall posters on art paper, framed or not.
Tip: wall pictures of different sizes hold together if they share a colour or a frame. Never both variables at once.
Design wall decor or classic wall decor?
- Design: simple shapes, bold flat colour, a decorative image that structures the room.
- Classic: photography, painting, old plates, recognisable subjects.
- Neutral: beige, linen, black and white, interior wall decor that does not date.
- Colourful: one strong point per room, the rest of the wall kept quiet.
A framed poster remains the easiest wall decor to change: five minutes, no extra drilling, where paint or wallpaper commit the room for years.
Poster, print or wall picture: what is the difference?
Here the three words mean the same thing: an image you hang on the wall. We say print because we print on art paper, not on canvas or metal.
- Framed: black, white, oak or walnut, assembled and ready to hang.
- Unframed: the sheet alone, to slide into a frame you already own.
