Choosing your black and white print

Which black and white poster should you choose?

Black and white brings together very different registers, and each tells something else:

  • Vintage black and white poster: old advertisements, silver prints, the patina of time.
  • Black and white photography poster: portrait, street, the matter and grain of the print.
  • Black and white film and cinema poster: icons of the big screen, cult scenes.
  • Iconic portraits, in the spirit of Brigitte Bardot or the pages of Vogue.
  • Abstract or design black and white poster: geometric shapes, pure contrast, minimalism.
  • Industrial black and white poster: architecture, metal structures, raw lines.

The filters on the left narrow things down by style, by mood and by subject.

Where should you hang a black and white poster?

  • Living room: a large contrast above the sofa, which structures the room without adding colour.
  • Bedroom: a portrait or a gentle landscape, settling even in strong contrast.
  • Kitchen: an urban scene or a graphic detail, at eye level.
  • Office: an abstract or architectural composition, plain beside the screen.
  • Entrance or hallway: a series of black and white photographs in the same size, for a gallery effect.

Tip: black and white goes with every wall colour, from pure white to charcoal. What makes the effect is the poster's contrast, not the shade of the wall.

Black and white poster or colour poster?

  • Black and white concentrates the attention on form, light and composition, without the distraction of colour.
  • It goes more easily with a decor already loaded with colours or materials.
  • Colour brings back a precise mood; black and white stays timeless and outlives decorating fashions.
  • On a wall that is already dark, prefer a print with a light dominant to keep contrast; on a pale wall, both directions work.

The 270 g photo paper with its semi-matte finish restores deep blacks without stray reflections, an important point for this kind of print. Available in 21x30, 30x40, 50x70, 70x100, and as a 100x140 polyptych for a composition across several panels.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, never on canvas. The same image is also available on a metal plate, in several sizes.

  • With frame: black, white or light oak, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
