Choosing the right poster

A map is made to be approached. Unlike a landscape, which gives itself entirely from the sofa, it invites the viewer to come and look for a city name or a coastline. It is the only subject in our catalogue that benefits from being hung in a hallway or near a desk, somewhere you pass within less than a metre.

This close reading calls for a large format. At 21x30, country names become illegible and the poster loses what makes it interesting. 50x70 is the useful minimum, 70x100 the format that does justice to antique maps.

It's also a poster that ages well in a child's room, because it changes function with age: decoration at three, an object of curiosity at eight, a travel landmark at fifteen.
