Choosing your psychedelic poster
Which psychedelic poster should you choose?
The genre covers several clearly distinct registers, inherited from different eras and movements:
- Undulating motifs: spirals, volutes, fluid shapes answering each other.
- Saturated colours: acid gradients, vivid contrasts, fluorescent palettes.
- Vintage psychedelic poster: the concert aesthetic of the 1960s and 1970s, distorted lettering.
- Fractal and kaleidoscopic motifs: repeated symmetries, a hypnotic effect.
- Cosmic visions: suns, mandalas, symbols drawn from the astral.
- Abstract psychedelic poster: free forms, with no recognisable figure or scene.
The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.
Where should you hang a psychedelic poster?
- Living room: a large size in saturated colours, as the single anchor piece.
- Bedroom: an undulating motif in softer tones, far from pure fluorescence.
- Creative office: a kaleidoscopic that stimulates without distracting for long.
- Hallway: a series of three identical sizes, the same palette.
- Games room or home cinema: cosmic visions and the vintage aesthetic find their natural place there.
Tip: on an already colourful wall, prefer a single strong motif rather than a stack of sizes.
Vintage or contemporary psychedelic poster?
- The vintage version takes up the graphic codes of concert posters: stretched lettering, a dated palette, period grain.
- The contemporary version explores cleaner forms, often built with continuous gradients and franker contrasts.
- On a retro or bohemian wall, the first fits in naturally.
- On a pared-back or minimalist wall, the second stands out more without clashing.
- The 50x70 brings out complex motifs; the 30x40 suits a simple, centred composition better.
Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?
All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, not on canvas or metal.
- With frame: black, white, oak or walnut, assembled and ready to hang.
- Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
