Choosing your African art poster
Which African art poster should you choose?
African posters cover quite distinct registers, each carried by recognisable motifs and colours:
- African mask poster: clean lines, tribal symbols, black and ochre contrast.
- Wax and bogolan patterns: African prints, geometric diamonds and bands, an earth and saffron palette.
- African woman portrait: graphic silhouette, jewellery and headwrap, vivid colours.
- Contemporary African art: abstract painting, geometric shapes, tribal heritage revisited.
- African sculpture and statuette: carved wood, bronze, clean volumes in black and white.
The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.
Where should you hang an African art poster?
- Living room: a large size above the sofa, paired with raw wood and natural materials.
- Bedroom: a portrait or a wax motif above the headboard, in warm tones.
- Entrance: an African mask to set the tone from the threshold.
- Office: a geometric composition, understated beside the screen.
- Dining room: a series of three identical sizes, above the sideboard.
Tip: ochres and terracottas stand out best on a pale or off-white wall, which lets the motifs breathe.
Graphic or figurative African art poster?
The graphic register, wax motifs, geometric shapes, abstract compositions, suits a pared-back interior and works in a small series as well as a large one. The figurative register, portrait, mask, animal silhouette, carries more narrative and stands on its own in a large size. On a wall already busy with materials, prefer the graphic. On a bare wall, the figure carries the subject further.
Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?
All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on fine art paper, not on canvas or metal.
- With frame: black, white, oak or walnut, assembled and ready to hang.
- Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
