Choosing your art deco poster

Which art deco poster should you choose?

The art deco of the 1920s and 1930s comes in several clearly recognisable registers:

  • Geometric motifs: straight lines, fans, chevrons and strict symmetry.
  • Art deco woman poster: elegant silhouettes, stylised profiles, flowing dresses.
  • Art deco fashion poster: couture, magazine covers, Parisian elegance.
  • Gilding and contrast: deep black, gold and silver, lacquer effects.
  • Travel and ocean liners: cruise posters, stations, hotels of the period.
  • Gatsby style: parties, jazz, stylised floral ornament.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.

Where should you hang an art deco wall poster?

  • Living room: a large geometric piece above the sofa, to set the tone.
  • Bedroom: an elegant silhouette or a golden motif, in muted tones.
  • Kitchen: a simple graphic motif, which takes a small size well.
  • Entrance: a vintage travel poster, the first sign of the house's style.
  • Office: strict geometric lines, which structure without distracting.

Tip: gilding and deep blacks come out better on a pale wall, which avoids too dark an effect.

Art deco 1925 or 1930: what is the difference?

  • 1925 matches the origins of the movement: stricter motifs, pure geometry, few curves.
  • 1930 softens: the lines round out, the compositions open up, the colours become more nuanced.
  • For a restrained interior, favour the 1925 register, more architectural.
  • For a warmer interior, the 1930 register agrees better with wood and natural materials.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, never on canvas. The same image is also available on a metal plate, in several sizes.

  • With frame: black, white or light oak, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
