Posters wave

Wave as seen by our artists: the Breton swell, the surf barrels and the great Japanese wave. Each poster is a personal reading of nature, hand-printed on 270 gsm photo paper with a semi-matte finish in our workshop in Fayence.

Choosing your wave poster

Which wave poster should you choose?

The wave comes in several distinct styles:

  • Hokusai wave print or Great Wave off Kanagawa poster: the most recognised Japanese print, a wash of blues and white foam ringed in black.
  • Japanese wave poster: other ukiyo-e prints and motifs, the same graphic world as Hokusai.
  • Minimalist wave poster: a single line of foam, a flat colour, a pared-back format.
  • Surfer poster: a silhouette in the tube or paddling out, an action scene.
  • Photographic wave poster: a close-up on the movement of the water, black and white or deep blue.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.

Where should you hang a wave poster?

  • Living room: the Great Wave off Kanagawa in a large size, alone above the sofa.
  • Bathroom: a minimalist wave or a deep blue, the room where the subject fits best.
  • Bedroom: a calm, graphic wave rather than a turbulent scene.
  • Office: an understated Japanese print, next to the screen.
  • Entrance or hallway: a surfer poster to set the tone of a house by the water.

Hokusai wave poster in a large size or as a polyptych?

In 50x70 or 70x100, the composition reads at a glance and suits a single wall. As a 100x140 polyptych, the Great Wave off Kanagawa spreads across several panels and gains presence, suited to a large expanse of wall or a reception room. The choice mostly depends on the width available: measure the wall before deciding, a polyptych needs space around it to breathe.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, not on canvas or metal.

  • With frame: black, white, oak or walnut, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
