Choosing your travel print

Which travel poster should you choose?

Travel comes in several registers, and they do not all speak to the same person:

  • Vintage travel poster: airline advertisements, old maps, period lettering.
  • Around-the-world poster: monuments, capitals, one destination per room.
  • Climbing poster: summits, rope teams, ridge lines at altitude.
  • Cruise poster: liners, harbours, sea horizons.
  • The Ghibli world, Spirited Away first among them: scenes and characters from the film, for those who love Japanese animation.
  • Travel notebook: sketches, handwritten notes, the spirit of a road journal.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.

Where should you hang a travel poster?

  • Living room: a destination in a large size, above the sofa.
  • Bedroom: a gentler scene, Chihiro or a travel notebook, away from the bustle.
  • Office: a map or a vintage poster, to make you want to leave.
  • Hallway: a series of three destinations, same artist, same size.
  • Entrance: the tone of a household that likes to move.

Tip: vintage posters take a thin frame well, which recalls the period advertisements framed in railway stations.

A poster of a place you have been, or one you dream of?

  • The lived poster shows a place visited, a precise memory, an annotated map.
  • The dreamed poster shows a coveted destination, still to come.
  • On an entrance or office wall, the dreamed destination keeps you going day to day.
  • In a living room or a bedroom, the lived memory anchors more, and gains in 50x70 or 70x100.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, never on canvas. The same image is also available on a metal plate, in several sizes.

  • With frame: black, white or light oak, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
