New York - The harbour between the columns

The view is framed by two columns with carved capitals, each set on a plinth bearing a draped figure, a terracotta vase at its foot: an agave on the left, a shrub on the right. Between them the harbour opens. A suspension bridge crosses the bay, laden with sailing ships, schooners and a steamer trailing smoke. Behind it the old city climbs, towers with pinnacles, columned pediments, domes, in a range of stone and tile. The Statue of Liberty stands on its islet to the right, and the sky stacks up in rosy clouds.
