An earthenware jug is painted in water, so close that it runs off the frame at the top and on the right. Its handle describes a large loop on the left, and the body swells into a bulge that fills the whole lower half. The colour is never even: it withdraws into the hollows, gathers in darker rims where the water stopped, and lets the paper breathe in patches. Behind, warm grey washes float without outline in the corners, laid on a reserve of cream.
