Choosing your classic artwork poster

Which classical works poster should you choose?

Classical painting covers several clearly distinct registers, and each imposes its own mood:

  • Painting reproduction: the great masters, from portrait to landscape, faithful to the original work.
  • Vintage painting: patinated shades, old framing, the spirit of a family gallery.
  • Master painting: academic compositions, historical or mythological scenes.
  • Impressionism: visible brushstrokes, changing light, open-air scenes.
  • Classical portrait: busts and isolated figures, a dark ground, a composed pose.
  • Antique still life: flowers, fruit, objects, in the painterly tradition.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.

Where should you hang a painting on the wall?

  • Living room: a painting reproduction in a large size, as the centrepiece above the sofa.
  • Dining room: an antique still life, echoing the table.
  • Office or library: a classical portrait, which gives the room its seriousness.
  • Entrance: a vintage painting, for a considered first look.
  • Bedroom: an impressionist scene in soft tones, never too busy.

Tip: a master painting in dark colours calls for a pale wall so it does not drown in it.

Which frame for a famous painting poster?

  • A thin, restrained frame leaves all the room to the reproduction, without competing with the work.
  • A wider gilt frame suits portraits and academic scenes, in the spirit of the original painting.
  • Unframed, the 270 g photo paper with its semi-matte finish keeps faithful colours, even in daylight.
  • The size counts as much as the frame: 50x70 for a centrepiece, 30x40 as an accompaniment, and the 100x140 polyptych for a composition in several panels.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, never on canvas. The same image is also available on a metal plate, in several sizes.

  • With frame: black, white or light oak, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
