Posters portrait format
Posters taller than they are wide, the orientation that fits anywhere: a narrow stretch of wall, a hallway, the gap between two windows. It is also the easiest to hang in a row or as a gallery wall.
Tableau vertical, affiche portrait : quel mur, quelle hauteur
Which portrait format poster should you choose?
Portrait format, taller than it is wide, fits the majority of walls available at home. A vertical print structures very different registers:
- Botanical poster in portrait format: a single stem or leaf, the verticality of the subject matches that of the frame.
- Portrait and human figure: bust or standing silhouette, the format follows the posture.
- Tall city map: a north-south axis brought out, a street or river running down the page.
- Typography and quote: a few centred words, plenty of space above and below.
- Vertical architecture: tower, bell tower, façade, the rising line fills the whole frame.
The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by subject.
Where should you hang a portrait format poster?
- Narrow hallway: the height of the format reads even in a tight passage.
- Entrance: a portrait or a typography print, alone near the door.
- Bedside: a vertical poster on each side of the bed, as a pair.
- Office: a tall city map, next to the screen.
- Staircase: several portrait formats aligned along the climb.
Portrait or landscape poster: how do you choose?
The wall decides the format before the subject does. A tall, narrow wall, between two doors or above a low piece of furniture, calls for a portrait format poster rather than a wide one that would feel short of air. Landscape format suits open walls, above a sofa or a wide headboard. For the same image, cropping it in portrait tightens the subject and reinforces its isolation, while landscape lets the surrounding decor breathe more.
Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?
All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, not on canvas or metal.
- With frame: black, white, oak or walnut, assembled and ready to hang.
- Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
