Posters world maps
World maps, antique maps and travel routes, made to be read up close as much as admired from afar.
Choosing your world map poster
Which world map poster should you choose?
The world map covers several registers, and they are not read in the same way:
- Classic planisphere: continents, oceans and a grid of longitudes, the outline that comes to mind straight away.
- Vintage or antique world map: faded shades, in the engraving style of the nineteenth century.
- Scratch map: countries or capitals to rub off yourself, a record of journeys made or still to come.
- World cities and capitals poster: names and symbols rather than relief.
- Black and white planisphere: a pared-back outline, without colour, for a wall already carrying shades.
- XXL or giant size: the whole world visible at a glance, with no effort of reading.
The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.
Where should you hang a world map wall poster?
- Office: a classic world map, above the desk, as a background for video calls.
- Child's or teenager's bedroom: a scratch map, to follow the countries visited.
- Living room: the XXL size, alone, above the sofa or the sideboard.
- Entrance or hallway: a vintage world map, setting the tone before you even enter the rooms.
- Dining room: a map of capitals in black and white, restrained beside the table.
Scratch map or fixed poster?
- The scratch map updates itself with your journeys: it changes with you, year after year.
- The fixed poster stays the same over time; it serves as decor, not as a record.
- The 50x70 suits the scratch map well, large enough to scratch a country without a microscope.
- For a wall planisphere in a very large size, the 70x100 or the 100x140 polyptych recreates the effect of an atlas laid open.
- The 30x40 or the 21x30 suit a map of capitals, read close up rather than from a distance.
Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?
All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, not on canvas or metal.
- With frame: black, white, oak or walnut, assembled and ready to hang.
- Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
