Choosing your bedroom wall art

What wall art for an adult bedroom?

Above a bed you look for a long time, and from close up. Calm subjects hold better than strong images. These are the families of decorative pictures that come back most often:

  • Soft abstract: round shapes, beige, terracotta, sand.
  • Botanical and foliage: olive, eucalyptus, dried grasses.
  • Black and white: photography, line drawing, classical nude.
  • Calm landscapes and romantic subjects: sea, dunes, mountains at dawn.
  • Scandinavian, japandi or boho style: linen, pale wood, neutral tones.
  • Prints for baby, child and teen bedrooms: animals, alphabet, maps.
  • Modern artwork for a main bedroom: simple shapes, two or three tones, calm wall decor.

Wall decor ideas: where to hang frames in a bedroom

  • Above the headboard: the obvious spot, centred on the bed.
  • On the opposite wall: what you see when you wake, rather than when you lie down.
  • Above a chest of drawers: a vertical wall poster lengthens the wall.
  • On either side of the bed: two identical formats, at bedside height.
  • Resting on a shelf, no drilling: one large frame leaning on the wall.

Tip: hang the centre of the print 20 to 30 cm above the headboard.

What size above a bed?

Count two thirds of the bed width. For a 160 cm bed, aim for 110 cm of wall covered.

  • One 70x100 alone above a double bed.
  • Two 50x70 side by side, with 5 cm between frames.
  • Three 30x40 in a row for a 140 cm bed.
  • The 101x141 polyptych in four panels on a wide wall.

Poster, print or wall picture: what is the difference?

Here the three words mean the same thing: an image you hang on the wall. We say print because we print on art paper, not on canvas or metal.

  • Framed: black, white, oak or walnut, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Unframed: the sheet alone, to slide into a frame you already own.
