Choosing your Bilbao poster

Which Bilbao poster should you choose?

Bilbao comes in several registers, and they do not tell the same city:

  • Bilbao architecture poster: the Guggenheim, its titanium curves, the bridges over the estuary.
  • Black and white Bilbao poster: Casco Viejo facades, marked contrasts, no colour.
  • Bilbao map or city plan poster: the Nervion estuary, the districts, the bridges in line.
  • Vintage Bilbao poster: old advertisements, a Basque feel, retro lettering.
  • Basque Country and Bilbao poster: green mountains, coast and industrial city together.
  • Contemporary Bilbao poster: flat colour areas, graphic illustration, a present-day line.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.

Where should you hang a Bilbao poster?

  • Living room: a view of the estuary or the museum, alone above the sofa.
  • Office: a graphic composition, plain beside the screen.
  • Entrance: a map of Bilbao, to place the city from the door.
  • Hallway: a series of three cities from northern Spain, all the same size.
  • Bedroom: a calm view of the river or the hills, with no dense detail.

Tip: the Guggenheim's titanium shifts with the light in the poster. Under a warm lamp it turns gold, under a cool light it turns grey.

Bilbao poster: architecture or city view?

  • Architecture isolates one building: the curve, the reflection, the material, with no context.
  • The city view puts the landmark back among the estuary, the bridges and the hills.
  • On an office wall, architecture alone holds better, because it reads fast.
  • In a living room, the wide view gives depth and takes a large size.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, never on canvas. The same image is also available on a metal plate, in several sizes.

  • With frame: black, white or light oak, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
