Choosing your Rome poster

Which Rome poster should you choose?

A Rome poster, or a Roma poster as it is also called, comes in several clearly distinct registers, and each gives the wall a different tone:

  • Vintage Rome poster: travel advertising, old lettering, a Grand Tour spirit.
  • Ancient Rome: the Colosseum, the forum, columns and ruins, the ancient Rome poster you cannot avoid.
  • Black and white Rome poster: film photography, marked contrasts, grain.
  • Roman architecture: domes, facades, fountains and squares.
  • Old maps of Rome: plans, districts, monuments marked in the old manner.
  • Painting and classical scenes: pictures, frescoes, academic compositions.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.

Where should you hang a Rome poster?

  • Living room: a large architectural view or a Colosseum, above the sofa.
  • Office: an old map or a black and white view, restrained beside the screen.
  • Entrance: a vintage Rome poster, to set the tone from the threshold.
  • Bedroom: a calm black and white, never a scene that is too busy.
  • Hallway: a series of Roman monuments, in the same size.

Tip: an ancient view in stone and sand tones agrees with a pale wall, while black and white adapts to every colour.

Which size for a Rome poster?

  • 50x70 and 70x100 for an architectural view or a Colosseum in a large size.
  • 30x40 for a detail: a column, a fountain, a fragment of fresco.
  • Three 21x30 in a row for a series of monuments.
  • The 100x140 polyptych for a panorama of the city spread over several panels.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, never on canvas. The same image is also available on a metal plate, in several sizes.

  • With frame: black, white or light oak, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
