Choosing your botanical print

Which botanical print to choose?

The line and the ground decide more than the species:

  • Vintage botanical print: old plate, cream ground, Latin name.
  • Line-drawn foliage: monstera, eucalyptus, olive, one colour only.
  • Herbaria: compositions of stems, on a bare ground.
  • Dried flowers: pampas, everlastings, muted tones.
  • Plant watercolours: transparent washes, paper left bare.
  • Graphic botanicals: two flat colours, one leaf outline.

The filters on the left narrow by dominant colour, style and mood.

Where to hang a botanical plate?

  • Bedroom: the room where muted greens hold best.
  • Bathroom: eucalyptus and monstera, out of the water spray.
  • Kitchen: herbs and citrus.
  • Hallway: a series of four plates, same format and same frame.
  • Office: line-drawn foliage, quiet behind the screen.

Tip: a botanical plate calls for a simple frame and a white margin. The Latin name must stay readable.

What size for a botanical print?

  • 30x40: the plate format, where the caption can still be read.
  • 21x30 for a series of four to six species.
  • 50x70 for a single foliage, in large.
  • Three 30x40 in a row for a complete herbarium.

Poster, print or wall picture: what is the difference?

Here the three words mean the same thing: an image you hang on the wall. We say print because we print on art paper, not on canvas or metal.

  • Framed: black, white, oak or walnut, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Unframed: the sheet alone, to slide into a frame you already own.
