Choosing your Normandy poster

Which Normandy poster should you choose?

Normandy comes in several clearly distinct registers, and each tells a facet of the region:

  • Vintage Normandy poster: old seaside advertising, retro lettering, resorts of the last century.
  • The Normandie, transatlantic liner: art deco lines, funnels, period portraits of the ship.
  • Seaside resorts: Cabourg, Trouville-sur-Mer, Houlgate, Deauville, with their boardwalks and their villas.
  • Cliffs and coasts: Etretat and its arches, changing light, low skies.
  • Mont Saint-Michel: an isolated silhouette, tides, backlight.
  • Harbours and villages: Honfleur, Barneville-Carteret, Saint-Pair-sur-Mer, moored boats and half-timbered houses.

The filters on the left narrow things down by dominant colour, by style and by mood.

Where should you hang a Normandy poster?

  • Living room: a view of Etretat or Mont Saint-Michel in a large size, alone above the sofa.
  • Entrance or hallway: a vintage poster of the Normandie, to set the tone of a seaside interior.
  • Bedroom: a calm scene of Honfleur or Trouville, in soft tones.
  • Office: an old advertisement for Deauville or Cabourg, restrained and graphic.
  • Kitchen or dining room: a Norman harbour, between blues and ochres.

Tip: cliff scenes take a wide size well, where a village street or a portrait of a liner stays legible smaller.

Antique poster or contemporary reinterpretation?

  • Vintage posters take up the vocabulary of railway and shipping-line advertising from the early twentieth century.
  • Contemporary versions, sometimes drawn from a style like David Hockney's, keep the subject but renew the colour and the line.
  • A room already full of old furniture welcomes a vintage poster better, which extends that vocabulary.
  • A barer interior leaves more room for a contemporary reading, franker in its flat colour.

Poster, print or picture: what is the difference?

All three words mean the same thing here: a printed image that you hang on the wall. We say poster because we print on photo paper, never on canvas. The same image is also available on a metal plate, in several sizes.

  • With frame: black, white or light oak, assembled and ready to hang.
  • Without frame: the sheet alone, to slide into the frame you already have.
